Ok so there's no question that the internet has made life easier.
It's definitely made my life easier but it's crazy to think about how much we rely on the internet for!
And because we rely on the internet so much, it has wiped out a lot of personal habits, some of which might have been time-consuming but also kind of fun.
So here are some of the habits the internet is said to have wiped out:
- Physical maps – everyone uses their phone or car GPS.
- Reading and encyclopedia – It’s highly unlikely you’ll see a kid reading an encyclopedia. They’ll use the internet to search for something or look up a definition. The internet has changed the way we consume information for sure.
- Spreading the Sunday paper out at the breakfast table - some of us are still reading the Sunday paper, but daily newspaper circulations have been taking a beating for years. Most people prefer reading digitally or watching the news!
- Rushing to our sofas for “appointment TV.” – There was definitely an innocence about sitting down and watching a TV series or special at a certain time every day or once a week. Now, between DVR and streaming services enabling our new binge-watching habits – it’s just not the same anymore! Who really sits down and watches a tv show at it's actual scheduled time? Also, no one wants to watch commercials either.
- Writing letters - Once upon a time, people wrote long letters to each other and waited anxiously for the postal service to bring back a reply. Then email was invented, and then texting came, and email died. When I think of emails I just think of work so if I want to get intouch with someone I send a text for sure not a letter. Letters take too long but it is still a cute idea to send a letter or post-card to a family member.
It's actually kind of sad to think that digital screens and technology took away some classic ways of communication and entertainment.
I'm sure there are still people who do these habits regularly and are keeping these habits alive though!
