These Were The Most Popular Dog Names in 2020

American Kennel Club Presents The Nation's Most Popular Breeds Of 2015

If you've been on social media over the last week or two, you saw how everyone was talking about how dogs had the best year of their lives this year, because they never had to be alone.

TRUE.

But it's also true that dogs had a great year because so many of them got adopted when the pandemic hit and people realized they would have so much more time at home and could properly train and take care of a dog.

So what did all those dogs who got brought home over the last 12 months get named, though? Let's take a look at the most popular dog names of 2020. Embark Veterinary, a dog DNA company, compiled the list of the most common names.

For female dogs, the most popular names were: Luna, Daisy, Bella, Lucy, Penny, Stella, Lola, Piper, Ruby and Willow.

For male dogs, the most popular names were: Cooper, Milo, Finn, Charlie, Tucker, Ollie, Bear, Max, Loki and Moose.

It turns out, there were THREE times more Lunas than Daisys last year (which is a huge margin!), but for male dogs, it was a much closer call between the top names Cooper and Milo. Interestingly, Luna has also become a more popular name for humans over the two decades. Luna actually was ranked 18 in baby names last year.

Aside from the top names by gender, it turns out pop culture was also big for dog owners this year. People named their dogs Finn from "Star Wars," Nala from Disney’s "The Lion King," Dobby from "Harry Potter," Zuko from "Avatar: The Last Airbender" and Zelda from Nintendo’s "The Legend of Zelda."

If people were being inspired by kitchen items, however, they were most likely to go with Mocha. And if they got inspiration from the outdoors, they chose names such as Clover, Juniper, and Sage.

What did you name your dogs this year?!
