How Being Pregnant With Twins Affects Your Appetite

If you didn't know by now, I'm pregnant with twins!

But have you ever wondered if being pregnant with twins means you have double the cravings? I have never been pregnant with just a singleton, so I really wasn't sure if what I was feeling was double anything or pretty normal.

Soooo luckily, an OB-GYN has all the answers that I don't have.

Dr. Jamil Abdur-Rahman, OB-GYN, medical travel blogger, and one-half of the Twin Doctors for TwinDoctorsTV talked to Romper and says the answer to if you have double the cravings is "yes and no."

In the first trimester, as I experienced, you're typically dealing with some intense hormonal changes and therefore have little to no appetite. The hormones actually cause a "sluggish" GI tract, which "results in women who are pregnant with twins feeling fuller longer, especially in the first trimester.”

Once your GI tract is back to normal, though, the nausea reduces and you start to feel hungrier again.

And when you start to get hungrier again, it's definitely likely you're needing more fuel than a mom with a singleton pregnancy! Because, "the body requires more energy in the form of calories to grow two babies than it does to grow one.”

It all makes sense!

But some people wonder if your level of hunger could point to you being pregnant with twins before tests are done to determine if you're having one or two, and unfortunately that is not the case.

From personal experience, I was hardly able to eat during the beginning of my pregnancy, so I definitely was not tipped off to the fact I was having twins from my food consumption.

But the level of exhaustion you feel and, of course, how much food you feel the need to consume further on in the pregnancy may be more clear signs.

But I would hope you are aware you're carrying twins before you hit your second trimester!
