How Megan Moroney Just Made Country Music History In This Monumental Moment

Megan Moroney made history as the first-ever winner of the MTV Video Music Awards Best Country category at the 2025 show, which took place on Sunday evening (September 7) at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.

The powerhouse singer-songwriter and first-time nominee, 27, was revealed as one of the earliest winners of the VMAs for “Am I Okay?,” the title track of her sophomore record that arrived last summer. The inaugural Best Country category also included nominees Chris Stapleton (“Think I’m in Love with You”), Cody Johnson and Carrie Underwood (“I’m Gonna Love You”), Jelly Roll (“Liar”), Lainey Wilson (“4x4xU”) and Morgan Wallen (“Smile”). Moroney took the MTV VMAs Extended Play Stage with her newest single, “6 Months Later.” Other performers throughout the star-studded, multi-genre show included Jelly Roll, Post Malone, Sabrina Carpenter, Tate McRae and more.
