Since 2002, New York City project two columns of light into the sky every September 11th from a site near ground zero as a 9/11 tribute. Well this year, New York won't project the beams of light into the sky. The lights feature 88 specially made lights used to create the projections, which tower over New York City until dawn on September 12th. However, the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, which is responsible for the tribute, announced the decision to cancel the display this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. A memorial and museum spokesman, Michael Frazier said in a statement, "the decision to cancel was made “after concluding the health risks during the pandemic were far too great for the large crew." Instead of the two beams of light, they are planning an alternative tribute which is to have tall buildings across New York illuminate their spires and facades with blue lights.
