If a student doesn't complete an assignment, do you think they should get a 0 or at least 50%?
(805):No way! Our school district policy is that you have to give them every opportunity to turn in late assignments and you can give them a percentage of the point but no they do not get credit for assignments they don''t complete.
(920): No. They should not get credit for what they did not do
(951): Absolutely not. The student should never get credit for work that they didn't do.
(714): Absolutely not. If I don t show up to work, do I get paid half the salary?
(323): It's part of a grading practice called standards-based grading. We do not give zeros because that creates too big of a deficit for students to recover from. It ruins their motivation.
(561): So the rationale behind it is that zeros affect a grade tremendously. When a student forgets an assignment and gets a zero, it can bring their grade down 5-7 point overall. The 50 doesn't bring it down so much. It''s got to do with the everyone is a winner mentality and money. The less kids that fail, the less kids districts have to pay for them to repeat classes.
(310): I don''t agree with this policy and I''m at an elementary school teacher. I think by doing that you''re teaching kids that it''s okay to not do their work. They''ll just think oh it doesn''t matter because they can''t pin it against me so I''m not going to do it anyway. I''m trying to think that maybe it''s because it''s a low-performing school already and they already struggle with students getting really bad grades that maybe they just thought okay we''re not going to hold it against them because they're already struggling academically anyway but all in all I still don't think it''s a good policy coming from a teacher standpoint
(951): Can we use this 50% policy in other areas of life? Like if I don't pay my rent I get credit for paying half?
