One of the best parts of working remotely is if your work zone stinks, you only have yourself to blame. And speaking of smells in the workplace, did you know there are some scents scientifically proven to help improve productivity? Here are a few to add to your home office.
● Rosemary. Rosemary gives off a sweet, earthy scent that’s been scientifically shown to improve memory. It also has been shown to improve mood.
● Lavender. Researchers from Meikai University in Japan have found lavender can “noticeably decrease the stress hormone, cortisol” which when left unchecked can increase irritability and decrease cognitive abilities. On top of that, studies have found “inhaling lavender essential oil before doing math problems helped subjects complete the problems faster and more accurately.” Information we could have all used before the SATs.
● Lemon. Studies show lemon oil enhances positive mood and some offices swear by it so much in the UK that they’re installing air ducts in their buildings to pump out the smell of lemons in the morning.
● Peppermint. Your nose isn’t the only thing that buzzes a bit when you smell peppermint. It has also been found to stimulate brains and improve “overall quality of memory.” So maybe candy canes should become a part of our regular diet?
