Every guy has that desire hiding deep down inside to be the hero who swoops in and saves the day. Having the skills and mental alertness to save a life in a crisis is a way to prepare yourself should that day ever come.
Here are the skills every guy should master to put himself in that position:
· CPR – You probably learned this in school, and then promptly forgot it. Find a local health class and bone up on your knowledge. It’s the easiest way to keep someone around until the pros arrive.
· AED – You’ve seed Automated External Defibrillators before…especially on TV when the doctor yells, “Clear!” Most retail stores, gyms, offices, and public spaces have them on-hand. A simple course from the Red Cross will teach you how to use it properly.
· Heimlich – Believe it or not, choking is the fourth largest cause of “unintentional injury.” Whether it’s the over-the-arm method or the wrap-around from the back, it’s a great skill to have in your back pocket. · Tourniquets – They can stop severe blood loss, but you’ve got to know what you’re doing (because you can actually do more damage if you screw up). You might be able to save a life or a limb with it.
· Drowning – Taking a lifesaving course at your local YMCA can help you with this one. Just know that a drowning person is panicking, and they might accidentally take you down with them. Start with a stick or life preserver before leaping in to save the day…and, if you’ve got to leap, make sure you’re prepared and know how to do it right. · Burn Treatment – A third-degree burn is nasty business, so you’ll obviously want to get the EMT’s on the way first and foremost. Knowing how to give immediate care while you’re waiting on an ambulance or driving them to the hospital can be crucial.
Plus, saving the day in an emergency situation isn’t exactly a bad stud move, either!
