If you’ve been holding off on talking to your boss about your contract because of the whole global health crisis thing, you should be seeing all the good news about the vaccine as your cue to take those negotiations off the back burner. Which is of course easier said than done. So here are some tips from the co-founder of Perchpeek, Paul Bennett, that may help you get some better perks from your company.
● Prepare Your Case. Before you send out the Zoom invite to your boss to talk numbers, sit down and think about all the hard work you’ve put in since the last time you two talked about perks. What projects have you completed? What extra responsibilities have you taken on? Think of these notes as your cheat sheet for getting better stuff from your company.
● Choose Your Timing. If your boss is having a terrible week put this conversation off until they’re in a better mood. Also, try to sync up this meeting around the time you’re on a hot streak in the company.
● Switch Perks You Don’t Use For More Useful Ones. You deserve it all but if you go into the meeting with your boss with some reasonable concessions, you might be more successful. For example, if your company currently pays for gym memberships or parking, ask them to trade that for something else you can actually use in lockdown. Maybe you can get them to pay a piece of the internet connection you’re using at home mostly to deal with their emails.
