Food News: Today It's National Chicken and Waffles Day!

It's National Chicken and Waffles Day

From LA to NYC, this quintessential meal of the rural south made a slow migration to the urban communities to the north and west. But, as odd as it seems, chicken and waffles have been around for more than 150 years. And while no one knows who first put chicken and waffles on the same plate together, we do know the meal was a staple of both African-American cooks and the Pennsylvania Dutch. Part breakfast, part supper, everyone can enjoy Chicken and Waffles any time of the day.

Food Included In Federal School Breakfast And Lunch Programs Recalled Due To Listeria Risk

Over 91-thousand pounds of frozen breakfast burritos and wraps served in federal school breakfast and lunch programs have been recalled because they might contain listeria. The food was made by the California company M.C.I. Foods between September 17th and October 14th. Seven different breakfast products from brands like El Mas Fino, Los Cabos, and Midamar are affected. The company found Listeria during routine testing of egg ingredients from suppliers, but no illnesses have been reported. Schools are told to throw away the food and not serve it. Listeria can cause fever, headaches, and other symptoms, and can be especially dangerous for pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and people with weak immune systems.

These States Love Candy Corn The Most

According to Brach’s 2024 sales data, Utah takes the crown as the biggest candy corn lover in the nation. The Beehive State tops a list heavy with Midwestern corn powerhouses like Iowa, Kansas, Indiana, and Missouri, though surprisingly, Illinois and Wisconsin didn’t make the cut. Maybe it’s the beehive symbolism or just Utah’s collective sweet tooth, but the state can’t get enough of those sugary tricolor triangles. Love it or hate it, candy corn is clearly having its moment… at least out west.

Most Americans Finish Their Candy Stash Before Halloween

Grown-ups know that the best part of Halloween is getting to nibble on the supply of candy you get for trick-or-treaters, but it turns out, a lot of us don’t have the willpower to stop. New research reveals that many Americans admit they can’t stop sneaking Halloween candy from their stash ahead of the holiday.

According to a survey of 2-thousand U.S. adults, the average person eats through their candy for trick-or-treaters twice before Halloween arrives. One in four (26%) confess they’ve had to restock their supply three times or more.

To be fair, a third are early planners who are stocked up on sweets by October 1st, which means they’re fighting the urge to indulge in a piece or two for a month.

But 55% admit they put off buying candy until the last minute and 43% are also dashing out to pick up finishing touches for costumes in the days ahead of the holiday.

Half (51%) of those who decorate for Halloween insist they have the best-looking house in the neighborhood.

Nearly two thirds (62%) consider themselves “Halloween people” and 43% say they go “all out” for Halloween.

People who dress up themselves or their kids spend almost five and a half hours putting together their costume, including hair, makeup and outfits.

Candy is what makes the holiday special, according to 42%, followed by costumes (27%), fall atmosphere (23%) and spooky vibes (21%).

Parents also say the excitement of kids is one of the best parts of the season (23%).

To be inclusive of trick-or-treaters with food allergies, 40% say they’re going to give out non-food goodies, like fidget toys, friendship bracelets, or small stuffed animals.
