Americans are still going south when relocating, according to new research. U-Haul’s Growth States of 2024 report is out, revealing the top states people in the U.S. moved to most last year.
- The moving company calculates the most popular states for movers by analyzing more than 2.5-million one-way U-Haul trips taken by people in the U.S. during 2024.
- It finds southern states continue to see the biggest numbers of one-way U-Haul moves.
- “Migration to the Southeast and Southwest continues as families gauge their cost of living, job opportunities, quality of life and other factors that go into relocating to a new state,” explains U-Haul international president John 'J.T.' Taylor.
- So, which state was the most popular for Americans relocating in 2024? South Carolina takes the top spot.
- It sends Texas to number two after three years as number one.
- On the flip side, California ranks 50th for the fifth year in a row, making it the state with the fewest people moving there.
- New York is 47th on the list, its lowest place in the ranking in a decade.
- States with the biggest slides in 2024 include Colorado, which fell 31 spots, Nevada, down 24, Wyoming, which decreased 22 spots, and New Mexico, down 21 places.
