TeeRoy's 2 Cents:

  • Sometimes it seems that nothing is safe.
  • It’s also a good idea to stay off public Wi-Fi, unless you have a VPN and good antivirus software to protect you.
  • A good workaround is to carry a backup battery as your own extra power source to charge your phone.

The FBI is warning the public to think twice about using public phone charging stations because hackers have tapped into some public chargers and can infect your smartphone, tablet or computer with malware.

A tweet from the FBI’s Denver field office said, “Avoid using free charging stations in airports, hotels or shopping centers. Bad actors have figured out ways to use public USB ports to introduce malware and monitoring software onto devices. Carry your own charger and USB cord and use an electrical outlet instead.” (NBC News)
