Georgia Will Conduct A Full Recount Of Presidential Ballots By Hand

Georgia Finishes Up Counting Ballots As Biden Has Been Projected To Win National Election

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said that the state will conduct a full hand recount of all the ballots in the presidential election. President-elect Joe Biden currently leads President Donald Trump in Georgia 49.5% to 49.2%, a margin of more than 14,000 votes. Officials said that three percent of the vote remains uncounted.

"With the margin being so close, it will require a full by hand recount in each county," Raffensperger said at a news conference in Atlanta. "This will help build confidence."

Raffensperger said the state needs to wait until Friday (November 13), the deadline for counties to submit their certified results, to start the recount process. He expects the recount to be done before the state officials certify the results on November 20.

"We're doing this because it's really what makes the most sense," he said. "With the national significance of this race and the closeness of this race, we have to run a statewide audit."

After the results are certified, candidates within a 0.5% margin are entitled to request a recount of the results. Raffensperger said that recount would be "scan recount" done by machines.

The Trump campaign praised the decision by Raffensperger to order a hand recount of all the ballots.

"This is an important first step in the process to ensure that the election was fair and that every legal vote was counted," Trump campaign communications director Tim Murtaugh said.
