- His name was Elwood Edwards and the world knew his voice.as the man who recorded AOL’s email greeting, “You’ve got mail,” Edwards has died after a “long illness,” his family has announced. He was 74 years old. He was a camera operator at a Cleveland TV station in 1989 when his wife – who worked for the startup internet company – volunteered him to record four phrases: “Welcome,” “You’ve got mail,” “File’s done,” and “Goodbye.” In a 2019 interview, Edwards said his newfound fame caught him completely off guard. “I had no idea it would become what it did, I don’t think anybody did,” he said. “Suddenly, AOL took off. I remember standing in line at CompUSA and seeing stacks of AOL CDs and thinking, ‘My voice is on every one of those, and nobody has a clue.’”
