NYC Studio Used by David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen Closes After 40 Years

The New York studio where Bruce Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A. and David Bowie's Let's Dance were recording has shut its doors.

Power Station studio—which was named Avatar Studio at the time of its closure—is located at 441 West 53rd Street. The space was an actual working power station before Jon Bon Jovi's producer cousin Tony Bongiovi and Bob Walters turned it into a recording studio in 1977.

What's next for the space is unclear. Variety reports the studio was purchased by the Berklee College of Music for over $23 million.

What Berklee, which is based in Boston, MA, may do with the space is unclear. Variety also reports that the new ownership could be announced in September.

In addition to being the place where crucial albums by Springsteen and Bowie were recorded, Power Station also hosted artists like Bon Jovi, Elton John, Billy Joel and Peter Gabriel during its heydey.
