Sammy Hagar says he thinks a Van Halen reunion involving both himself and David Lee Roth is "kind of inevitable."
"There's so much money involved, that somebody could make it happen," he tells Rolling Stone's Andy Greene. "Because, you know, the promoters, the management, the T-shirt guys...you just name it."
Hagar says if Eddie and Alex Van Halen are willing to talk about a reunion, he's ready to get on a plane to go meet them.
But the singer emphasized the only Van Halen reunion scenario in which he's interested involves himself, Roth, Michael Anthony and the brothers.
"That's it," he says. "[Eddie's son Wolfgang's] band opens, I don't care; he can come out and play with Eddie during his solo. This is about the Van Halen that really matters."
The singer says he and Roth could take turns during the setlist, and the result would be better than any alternative he can think of.
"Instead of trying to do duets with Dave—I wouldn't even try to push that button—I'd say, 'No, no, Dave you go out there and play two songs. I walk out, I'll do two songs. I'll walk off.'"
"Can you imagine the competition of that?" Hagar asks. "...You gotta hit it hard, and you better be good! It's like, don't be just bullshitting your way through this. I think it would create the best Van Halen show that could possibly be done today."
Hagar, who's reportedly worth over $120 million, says he's also willing to donate his earnings from such a tour to food banks.
"I would like to [do that] for closure on there and give the fans the best Van Halen show that could possibly happen today. And then say, 'Okay, now I still don't like you guys," he laughs.
Perhaps the biggest obstacle is for Hagar and Anthony to repair their relationship with Eddie. Hagar says he and Eddie haven't spoken in person in 13 years, and they haven't communicated at all in at least two years (when Hagar wished Eddie a happy birthday via social media).
"I really think it's kind of inevitable. And if it doesn't happen, it's getting kind of late now. I just don't think—at 75, I don't think I'll want to do a Van Halen reunion."
