A Capitol Fourth: Belinda Carlisle Says "The Go-Go's Are Finished" tells Kyle McMahon on Pop Culture Weekly
In a recent episode of Pop Culture Weekly with Kyle McMahon, I had the pleasure of interviewing the legendary pop icon Belinda Carlisle. The podcast episode, aptly titled "Chatting with Pop Icon Belinda Carlisle about A Capitol Fourth, The Go-Go's & More!", delved into her illustrious career, her experience as a member of the pioneering all-female band - The Go-Go's, her recent induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, performing on PBS A Capitol Fourth and her new EP, Kismet.
In response, Carlisle reminisced, "Well, it's amazing. I mean, we not only played our own instruments but we wrote our own songs. And it was a complete female operation, female management, female roadies. And you know, we started off being a girls club. And the fact that we made an album, the first album, considered to be such a classic, like that, of course it's amazing."
Regarding the band's 2022 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Carlisle described it as "an incredible way to cement the legacy of the band." She added, "It doesn't get any better than that. It was a night full of love and celebration, and you know… I think it probably was the most incredible evening professionally of any of our lives."
When I asked her about the future of The Go-Go's, Carlisle revealed, "The Go-Go’s are finished. We decided that after the Rock (& Roll) Hall (of Fame) that was a great way to cement the legacy of the band. We did a few dates after that, that we had to make up and everybody kind of went their separate ways and some of us felt that it was a perfect way to, you know, to say goodbye."
While The Go-Go's may have ended their journey, they ended it the way they started it: on their own terms. Still, Belinda Carlisle continues to make waves in the music industry. Her new EP, Kismet, written by the legendary songwriter Diane Warren, is out now and she is currently preparing for her upcoming Decades tour and she’ll be performing 3 songs on PBS A Capitol Fourth on July 4th. For fans of The Go-Go's and Belinda Carlisle, this episode of Pop Culture Weekly is a must-listen, offering a deep dive into one of pop music's most influential careers.
