You might want to go buy some mosquito repellent if you don't have any because an extremely rare case of dengue was found in Pasadena.
According to KTLA 5, Pasadena public health officials confirmed the first case of the mosquito-born illness, dengue, in California. The reasons as to why this case is extremely rare is because it was locally transmitted instead of being caught due to international traveling.
“Pasadena is working with healthcare providers to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of dengue infection and is coordinating prevention efforts with local and state public health officials,” stated Interim Health Officer, Dr. Parveen Kaur. “Eliminating mosquito breeding sources is essential to reducing the spread of mosquitoes and the diseases they carry.”
To help protect yourself from the risk of the mosquito-borne diseases the Pasadena Public Health Department suggests these precautions:
- make sure to get rid of water in rain gutters, rain barrels, buckets or anything that holds water
- maintain swimming pools, spas or ponds
- make sure to change the water in your pet dishes or birdbaths
- wear insect repellent with CDC and EPA approved active ingredients
- wear loose fitted, light-colored and long-sleeved shirts and pants
