Kesha has performed her comeback hit, “Praying,” more times than we can actually remember, but her performance of the ballad at the 60th annual Grammy Awards on Sunday night (January 28) was probably her most important showing to-date.
Dressed in an all-white ensemble, the pop star took the stage along with some major female backing, including the likes of Bebe Rexha, Camila Cabello, Cyndi Lauper, Julia Michaels, and Andra Day, and it was stunning. After all, it was the music industry's turn to sound off on the #MeToo movement, with several attendees wearing white roses to show their support for the women who have stood up for sexual misconduct in Hollywood. It was emotional. It was moving. It was everything that the Grammys needed on Sunday night to get folks to shed tears.
Previous to the big show, which saw female titans like Lady Gaga and Rihanna hit the stage, the pop star opened up about what it meant to perform the emotional cut. “When I wrote praying, with ben Abraham and Ryan Lewis, I just felt as if I had gotten a huge weight off of my shoulders," the 30-year-old singer captioned a social media post of Madison Square Garden in New York City. "It felt like an emotional raw victory for myself, one step closer to healing. I never could have known what would’ve happened these past few years. I needed this song in a very real way. I’m so proud and nervous and overwhelmed to be performing it at the Grammys on Sunday, and if you need it I hope this song finds you."
"Praying" was the lead single off of Kesha's 2017 effort, Rainbow, which debuted at No. 1 position atop the Billboard 200 Albums Chart. In addition to performing, the star was also nominated in two categories: Best Pop Vocal Album (Rainbow) and Best Pop Solo Performance ("Praying").
