INTERVIEW: Tinashe Talks New Song 'Superlove' | In Her Words

Tinashe is destined for pop superstardom, but she’s doing it her own way and will not compromise her vision for anyone. See: her energetic new single “Superlove.”

Just after the release of the summertime video for the new single, the 23-year-old rising star took to iHeartRadio HQ in New York City for an exclusive interview to talk about her Tricky and The Dream-produced single, the accompanying visual and her heavily delayed sophomore album, Joyride.

Think of it as a friendly catch-up with an old friend, who is on the verge of releasing her brand-new collection in October. Peep all the goods in yet another installment of In Her Words.

On Working With Producers Tricky And The Dream: “I worked with Tricky and the Dream for the first time over a year ago or a couple of years ago. It just took a while to build our relationship to the point where I feel like they really understood where I was coming from. Once we built that chemistry, it was perfect. We were able to create a lot of really awesome stuff that I'm really excited for everyone to hear. . . .The first time working with the producer is always an interesting process because you're getting used to their creative process. They're getting used to your creative process. You really just have to get to know each other and know how each other works. I think that process is always different depending on who you're working with.”

On Her Baywatch-Themed Music Video For "Superlove": “The Baywatch theme was just to give it a location and a setting. I'm always really into giving the video an iconic storyline or theme, so that it's always something you can reference and come back to. I thought that it's summer. We want to do something fun. The beach seemed like a perfect setting for a song like that.”

On The Importance Of The JaQuel Knight-Helmed Choreography: “I think for this routine it was really important for me obviously to showcase the dance because that's such a huge part of who I am as an artist, but you always want to have moves in there that are relatable to people as well so that the fans at home are able to pick them up and do their own versions of them. With this video and with this dance routine, I was really excited to have a lot of fun moments in there.”

On Pushing Genre Boundaries With Joyride: “I think I live my life in the way that I don't like to fit into any kind of category or box. I think that that's something that all human beings do, but for some reason we really like to label each other and limit ourselves to one particular thing or another, which I think is just very limiting, especially as a creative person. It's limited to be like, ‘Oh, I'm this kind of artist,’ or, ‘I make this kind of sound,’ because as a human being, as a creative person, I'm always influenced by new things. I feel like I'm always growing and evolving. I also really enjoy a lot of different kinds of music. I think you can hear those influences in my music. I really love not really fitting into one genre specifically.”
