‘I'm Not Joking’: Trump Says There Are ‘Methods’ For Him To Serve 3rd Term

President Donald Trump believes there are ways he could legally serve a third presidential term.

During an interview with NBC News on Sunday (March 30), Trump said there are “methods” for him to seek a third term in office despite the 22nd Amendment of the Constitution legally prohibiting such a move.

“There are methods which you could do it,” the president told NBC News’ Kristen Welker.

Welker asked if one of those “methods” would be Vice President JD Vance running in 2028 and then “pass[ing] the baton” to Trump.

“Well, that’s one. But there are others too,” the president said, declining to elaborate.

Ratified in 1951, the 22nd Amendment of the Constitution states: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.” Repealing or changing the 22nd Amendment would require two-thirds of the votes in the House and the Senate along with ratification by three-quarters of the states.

Tennessee Rep. Andy Ogles (R) has introduced legislation to begin the process of changing the wording of the 22nd Amendment to allow a president who serves nonconsecutive terms to make a bid for a third four-year term.

During Sunday’s interview, Trump, who has previously weighed the idea of serving a third term, emphasized, “I’m not joking.”

“It is far too early to think about it,” he added.
