Planning on traveling outside the U.S. anytime soon? Better make sure your passport is up-to-date.

Federal officials say getting a new passport could take months, due to a massive backlog of more than 2 million applications.

Why the sudden surge? With travel restrictions lifted and a majority of Americans fully vaccinated, many are getting ready to travel again.

While typical passport processing takes about 11 weeks, officials recommend applying at least six months in advance.
