Sometimes house guests overstay their welcome, but how do you tell them to leave without being rude? Here's some tips:
- Mention that it's getting late. Ex: "Thank you for coming. I hope you had a wonderful time. I would love to be your host again some other tie. I think you should be heading back now since it is getting really late."
- Non-Verbal Cues. You can start cleaning up and that should clue your guests into the fact that it's time for them to leave. If they don't, try this: "I am afraid I may have to ask you to leave as I hav ego clean everything before heading to bed."
- Offer To Call Them A Ride. Ex: "Can I call a cab for you or get you an Uber?"
- Set An Expectation. When making plans for guests, let them now beforehand what time you expect them to leave. Ex: "I'm free until 10pm to have you come over."
- Avoid People-Pleasing. It can be easy to slip into the overly polite role of "good host" so make sure you're direct. Ex: Thank you so much for coming over. I love having you so nearby. Now I need to (insert task). Thank you again for coming over. Let's do this again some time."
- Be Mindful of Your Tone and Body Language. Many people have a difficult time 'putting their guests out' because they don't know how to do so in a non-confrontational way. Speak calmly, with a smile.
