In a recent interview with Ted Talks Chris Anderson, Elon Musk admitted that he does not own home and instead couch surfs with his friends. "I don't even own a place right now, I'm literally staying at friend's places... If I travel to the Bay Area, which is where most of Tesla's engineering is, I basically rotate through friends' spare rooms." While Musk has an estimated net worth of $251 billion, he tweeted back in May 2020 that his intentions were to sell almost all of his possessions and not own a house.
Musk also told Anderson that despite his net worth, he doesn't own a home or yacht, doesn't like to take vacations, and admits one of his few luxuries in life is his private jet.
This isn't the first time Elon has made waves over his thrifty lifestyle. His on again off again partner Grimes said in an interview with Vanity Fair that Musk sometimes lived "below the poverty line." She went on to say that he refused to buy a new mattress even though her side had a hole in it and that she wanted to "not live in a very insecure $40,000 house" where there was "no security" and that she was "eating peanut butter for eight days in a row."
