A 76-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of poisoning after eight children fell ill at a summer camp in England. The children, who attended the camp at Stathern Lodge, were taken to the hospital on Sunday (July 27) after feeling unwell. All have since been discharged.

The investigation is in its early stages, and police have not yet disclosed the ages or genders of the children involved.

The man was detained on suspicion of administering poison with intent to injure, aggrieve, or annoy. He remains in custody as police continue their investigation. The East Midlands Special Operations Unit's Major Incident Team is leading the investigation to ensure a thorough inquiry.

The incident has prompted the Leicestershire Police to refer themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to concerns about their initial response. The IOPC is investigating whether there were any breaches of professional behavior that led to a delay in the police response.

Detective Inspector Neil Holden stated, "We understand the concern this incident will have caused to parents, guardians, and the surrounding community." He assured that dedicated resources are in place to safeguard the children involved and that ongoing support is being provided.

Assistant Chief Constable James Avery confirmed during a news conference that a triage center was set up at Plungar Village Hall to assess all children present at the camp. The police are working closely with partner agencies, including children's services, to ensure full safeguarding.

Local MP Ed Argar described the reports as "clearly shocking" and "deeply concerning," urging the public not to speculate while the investigation is ongoing.
