Dan Reynolds is not shy about his faith. He's also not shy about his political views and acknowledges that the Mormon faith is not the most tolerant when it comes to the LGBTQ community.
In a new BBC III documentary, the Imagine Dragons frontman details his personal fight for LGBTQ rights, especially as they pertain to the church.
"Standing as a face of the Mormon church, if I just stand back and say I don't want to talk about Mormonism, or something in the press, and stuff, I feel guilt," he admits. "I feel like I am standing, then, for bigotry."
What's alarming to the singer is the fact that suicide rates in Utah teens have tripled since 2008. Though he is a devout Mormon, Reynolds is taking a stand against the church's homophobic views. In 2017, he started the LoveLoud festival as a way to help raise awareness of the struggles Mormon LGBTQ teens and young adults face. In its second year, the event raised not only awareness, but also $1 million to an array of LGBTQ charities.
"If there's one thing my Mormon values have taught me since I was young, it's that no matter what the world says about who you are, what you believe, still do it. 100%," Reynolds says. "A determined Mormon is a scary thing, I will tell you that, because they don't stop"
