President Trump called the largest mass shooting in the United States an "act of pure evil." Speaking from the White House Trump said Americans are joined in "shock and grief"after over 50 people were killed and over 500 people were injured when Stephen Paddock opened fire on the crowd of the Route 91 Harvest Festival. Trump praised the quick actions of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and first responders he said helped save the lives of so many. He said the speed with which they responded was miraculous and prevented an even greater loss of life.
Trump said that in the face of horror, America comes together. He asked the nation to call upon the bonds of citizenship, ties of community and the comfort of common humanity. Trump said while people are looking for some kind of light in the darkness, the answers don't come easy.
Trump said the American flag will be flown at half staff. He will head to Las Vegas on Wednesday to meet with victims and law enforcement officials.
Las Vegas Police say more than 50 people are dead and over 500 injured after a gunman fired into a crowd at a packed country music festival on the strip. An armed man opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay and Casino onto the crowd of concert-goers below last night.
This morning Trump tweeted, "My warmest condolences and sympathies to the victims and families of the terrible Las Vegas shooting. God bless you!"
Vice President Mike Pence tweeted out this morning that he and his wife Karen are praying for the victims and offering their love. He also thanked the "courageous first responders for their acts of bravery."
