Struggling to get your kid to pick up a book this summer? Even if they like reading, getting them to do it during the school break can be a challenge. But these tips can help your little one breeze through their summer reading list and actually enjoy it.
● Choose a variety of reading materials - Head to the bookstore or library and let your kid lead the way. Grab what’s required for school, but encourage them to get books, magazines, comics, graphic novels and books they’re interested in.
● Create customized book nooks - Set up a cozy, distraction-free spot for your child to go anytime they’re in the mood to read. Include blankets, pillows, book lights and anything that makes the space more appealing to them.
● Find a fun way to keep track of reads - Use a chalkboard or dry-erase board or DIY a special chart to show off their progress.
● Join the fun - Set a good example for your kid by picking up some summer reads for yourself.
● Set aside time for reading together - Whether you’re each reading your own book or you’re reading along with your little one, doing it together makes a big difference.
● Read some of their books - That way you can talk about what they’re reading and make recommendations based on what they like. It’s also a good way for you to ask questions and make sure your kiddo is paying attention to what they’re reading.
● Check out reading challenges - Your school or library may offer rewards to summer readers that will encourage them to reach those goals.
