Airlines May Start Weighing You Before You Board Your Flight

FRANCE-AIRPORT-TRANSPORT-FEATURE

How would you feel if every time you went to get on an airplane, you had to step on a scale so they could weigh you?

Yeah, I don't love the idea either!

But there's a good reason behind why airlines may start implementing this practice: making sure the plane has the right amount of fuel for each flight.

Getting an accurate reading of the weight on a flight can be critical not only for fuel but also for safety purposes, though some feel weighing each passenger can be insensitive or body-shaming fliers.

The entire idea came from a British startup, Fuel Matrix, which suggested discreetly screening passengers' weight before the flight in order to help the airlines save money on fuel costs. Of course, they encourage discreet weighing to make sure passengers don't feel shamed over their size or body weight.

Basically, there would be pressurized pads at either the bag drop locations or in security screenings which would take your weight and send it to the airline to calculate for your flight specifically. This way, there's no one else actually seeing your weight!

Would you be okay with getting weighed if it was done in this way?

I think as long as my weight wasn't being announced to fellow passengers or anything like that, I wouldn't mind it. And if it's all for the safety of our flight as well, I think it could be worth it!

The startup company isn't encouraging any weight would require being charged more, it would simply be used for the airline itself in fuel cost and safety.

U.K. airports will likely be the first to see this weighing system in place, and then eventually have hopes to expand to the rest of the world.

Honestly, I think it's fascinating that we haven't had this in place yet! It makes sense if done correctly.
