48 years ago, on Christmas Day of 1970, a 23 year old helicopter gunner fighting in Vietnam, received a Christmas letter from a 6th grade girl.
The letters were part of a school project for Donna Caye. In it she wrote, "Dear Serviceman … I want to give my sincere thanks for going over to war to fight for us. The class hopes you will be able to come home.”
At the time, servicemen were fighting what they felt was a thankless war. That letter meant so much to him that he still has it on display in his Idaho home.
John Metzler asked his family to try to get in touch with Donna Caye. They lied about not being able to find her and set up a surprise visit from Donna.
Remember how we used to wait for letters to arrive?
