Here's today's feel-good story:

We have all heard of different ways to cure hiccups. But a particular type of drinking straw developed by a scientist seems to be very effective.

The L-shaped drinking straw requires both a suction and swallowing motion, stopping 92% of hiccup attacks on the spot, and costs $15.

When the straw is inserted into water, a pressure valve on the bottom of the straw will block the water from moving upward as fast as the strength of the suction that a human would generate would normally allow. This will cause the phrenic nerve to activate all of the diaphragm's capacity while swallowing uses the vagus nerve.

These two components of the nervous system are the causes for the contractions involved in hiccups, so keeping them busy prevents them from contracting.
