The U.S. Treasury has placed its final order for penny blanks, signaling the end of penny production. The U.S. Mint will continue making pennies until the blanks run out, but no new pennies will be added to circulation by early next year. Stores may have to round up or down to the nearest nickel as the supply of pennies diminishes. Former President Barack Obama and President Donald Trump have both considered eliminating the penny due to high production costs. The Treasury Department expects to save $56 million by discontinuing the penny.
