The first breathtaking images from the Webb telescope, a possible Virgin Mary visitation before a mass audience, and Bigfoot being at the center of a bizarre murder in Oklahoma were among the strange, unusual, and enlightening stories to cross our desk this week.
By far the most bizarre story of the week unfolded in Oklahoma, where a man was arrested for allegedly murdering his fishing buddy and, when questioned by police, he explained that Sasquatch was to blame. The suspect, Larry Sanders, told authorities that the very strange slaying came about when his friend, Jimmy Knighten, "summoned Bigfoot to come and kill him." As a matter of self defense, he asserted to the cops, he was forced to strike then strangle the man and leave his body floating in the South Canadian River before he, himself, wound up dead at the hands of the fearsome cryptid. As one might imagine, police didn't buy his story and, without Bigfoot around to corroborate it, Sanders ended up being arrested and charged with Knighten's murder.
Astronomy fans were over the proverbial moon this past week when NASA released the first images from their newly operational James Webb Space Telescope, which boasts an array of powerful instruments that can capture observations of distant space with a clarity unlike anything seen before. In a testament to the significance of the occasion, the first picture was unveiled on Monday evening at a special event presided over by President Biden at the White House. The following day, NASA released four more breathtaking images which showcased the awesome observational power of the successor to the Hubble Space Telescope.
This past week saw a particularly wondrous story emerge out of Nigeria, where a priest claims that the Virgin Mary appeared at his church and more than 100 parishioners witnessed the astounding event. Fr. Evaristus Bassey shared the incredible account of the events at the St Charles Lwanga Catholic Church on social media, providing testimonies from multiple individuals and admittedly hard-to-decipher photos which purportedly show the heavenly visitor. While the Virgin Mary was said not to have imparted any message to the congregation, many interpreted the visitation as a reminder that she is watching over them and protecting the church.
