Ryan Tedder of OneRepublic is a very busy guy. He's not only making music with OneRepublic, he's in the studio with other artists, and OneRepublic is getting ready to go on the "Never Ending Summer Tour" with NEEDTOBREATHE. Ryan stopped by to talk to Valentine in the Morning after almost 2 and 1/2 years to talk about his new song in 'Top Gun: Maverick', his friendship with Tom Cruise, mental health breaks, no longer touring for long periods of time, and more!
The biggest movie in America is 'Top Gun: Maverick' especially because of the one scene that's all over the internet aka Miles Teller shirtless dancing on the beach. OneRepublic's newest song 'I Ain't Worried' happens to be the song playing during that scene and is essentially the soundtrack for Miles Teller's abs.
Ryan Tedder and Tom Cruise ended up becoming genuine friends over the past two years when Tom filmed Mission 8 and Ryan has nothing, but nice things to say about Tom.
"He's just a great dude, burst of energy and positivity as you can imagine and infections and i'm so happy we connected over this song. This moment and the scene was so critical to him and his continuous obsessing over every detail of this...the first time I saw it, Tom was texting me while I was watching the movie saying 'be brutal man, be honest, tell me what you think.' I got to the end of it and I said 'dude of all the sequels i've ever seen, you can't call it a sequel that would be giving it a disservice. This is by far tied with the best sequel of all time that i've ever seen. It's tied with God Father 2. That is how good this sequel is and i'm not gassing you.'"
Shawn Mendes recently made a post about how he needed to cancel 3 weeks worth of shows for his tour in order to take care of himself and his mental health. Ryan Tedder admitted that he's been in the exact same spot as Shawn and even thinking about OneRepublic's upcoming "Never Ending Summer Tour" is giving him a bit of anxiety.
"I'd be lying if I said that this upcoming tour hasn't caused me sleepless nights and anxiety because it has. Two months is a long time. Now, fortunately we can travel a little differently this time. What Shawn did pulling the rip cord 3 weeks into a tour, I did that at the end of 2016. I had a full nervous mental breakdown, complete collapse, I went into my record label, sat with the President of the label a week before the album came out and I said i'm going to end up in a hospital if I have to do this. I have been gone for 70% of the last 10 years I have missed of my family and friends, I don't have a life. I make good money, but I don't even have time to spend it. People always say 'oh you do so well', it's not even about that. You can't enjoy what you've done. When Shawn made that post, I was instantly taken back to 2016 that mental state where you say I am not well. Then, I spent all of 2017 feeling like the world's biggest failure. I canceled an entire global tour, I pulled the rip cord on an album, I stopped all mid-stream because I felt like I was going to collapse."
Ryan Tedder feels like he has a different place in his life now and his mindset has changed a bit about touring.
"I'm not announcing this officially, but I don't see a future where we ever do a tour this long. This tour that we're about to do in America, everyone should come see it because i'm not going to do it again. We'll tour America, but i've already decided and I talked with the band that we'll pick maybe the 15 or 20 biggest markets for us and we'll only play those. This will be the last time that I get in tour bus and disappear for two months for the rest of my career. I have no desire to do it again. I'm extremely excited to do it this last time."
