Well, Halloween 2020 is officially going to look just as different as the rest of this year has. LA County officials have released guidelines as to what we can and cannot do to celebrate the upcoming holiday this year, and families with kids are not going to love it.
First things first, there will be no door-to-door trick-or-treating allowed this year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
“Door-to-door trick-or-treating is not allowed because it can be very difficult to maintain proper social distancing on porches and at front doors especially in neighborhoods that are popular with trick or treaters,” the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health said in the guidelines. They also added that 'trunk-or-treating’ events - where children go from car to car instead of door to door - are not allowed.
Further, there will be no gatherings or parties with people outside of your household allowed, even if they are held outdoors and there will be no carnivals, festivals, live entertainment or haunted house attractions.
So how *can* you celebrate Halloween this year? Especially if you have little kids?
People can have online parties and contests, such as costume or pumpkin carving; car parades that comply with public health guidance for vehicle-based parades; Halloween movie nights at drive-in theaters; Halloween-themed meals at outdoor restaurants; Halloween-themed art installations at an outdoor museum; and decorating homes and yards with Halloween-themed decorations.
So maybe this is the year to go ALL OUT for your Halloween decorations, right!? Give people who might be driving through the neighborhoods to look at decorations something to be excited about. Plus, maybe this is how families adapt - driving through well-decorated neighborhoods and having the kids eat candy while they do it.
It all is pretty sad, and I wish my kids could have Halloween this year (I think they would finally really understand it!!) but we all also know that this is for the best to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Hopefully we can hold off on ONE year of Halloween to ensure we can safely have many more Halloweens to come.
