As the coronavirus pandemic continues, California lawmakers are deciding if they want to create a $600 weekly unemployment benefit that will be provided by the federal government expiring this month. According to Assemblyman Phil Ting (D-San Francisco),
"There are so many people who are relying on that money to pay rent, to buy food. I think the state has to do everything possible to help them pay their bill."
This announcement comes as the federal supplement just ended and the state unemployment checks will go back to the weekly average of $340 unless the state or federal government decides to go through with the $600 unemployment benefit. The money for this benefit would be borrowed from a federal trust that has currently been covering California's cost of paying the unemployment benefits for those who lost their jobs.
