Former Bengals Head Coach Sam Wyche passed away today at the age of 74. According to WCPO, he died at his home in Pickens, S.C., after a battle with cancer.
Of course Wyche coached the Bengals from 1984 to 1991, and was the last head coach in Cincy to lead the team to a Super Bowl. Before coaching, he played 7 seasons in the NFL, and he also played Quarterback two years for the Wheeling Ironmen.
I'll never forget the time he scolded Bengals fans during their game against the Seahawks on December 10, 1989 at Riverfront Stadium. The Bengals were losing, so the fans started throwing snowballs at Seahawks players.
It got bad enough that the refs had to stop the game, so Sam Wyche grabbed a microphone that was on the field and told the crowd, “Will the next person that sees anybody throw anything onto this field, point 'em out, and get 'em out of here. You don't live in Cleveland, you live in Cincinnati.”
