RECALL ALERT: Neutrogena Recalls Its Light Therapy Acne Mask!

Bad news for anyone who uses Neutrogena’s LED mask to zap zits. The company is recalling its Light Therapy Acne Mask and Activator“ out of an abundance of caution” because it could potentially cause eye damage.

The Insta-famous device uses red and blue lights to battle acne-causing bacteria and inflammation, and while Neutrogena insists the technology is safe for use “by the general population when used once per day as directed,” there are concerns that it could affect eyes. The masks, which were popular on social media thanks to celebs likeLena Dunhamposing while wearing one, have been discontinued, but you can still buy Neutrogena’s Light Therapy Acne Spot Treatment, which uses the same technology but isn’t worn over the eyes.

In a statement, the company explains that “visual effects” linked to the use of the mask are “rare, generally mild, and transient.” It explains, "For a small subset of the population with certain underlying eye conditions, as well as for users taking medications which could enhance ocular photosensitivity, there is a theoretical risk of eye injury."
