Selena Gomez‘s on-again, off-again relationship with Justin Bieber has been a constant headline surrounded by rumors, confusion, drama, and criticism sparked by the media and fans. But now the 22-year-old is revealing her side of the back and forth romance with her new single, “The Heart Wants What It Wants,” and its music video.

The somber black-and-white visual, which was released early Thursday morning in tandem with the lovelorn track, opens with a raw and vulnerable recording of the Stars Dance artist explaining her catch-22.

“I felt like I know him, I know his heart, and I know what he wouldn’t do to hurt me,” she says through tears. “I didn’t realize that feeling so confident, feeling so great about myself and it just be completely shattered by one thing. By something so stupid. You make me feel crazy, you make feel like it’s my fault. I was in pain.”

After a brief meltdown in the privacy of her own dressing room, the “Slow Down” singer steps out into the public with a brave front, and attends a soiree with an actor who plays Justin. The video shows sex-fueled scenes of Selena and the mystery man having intimate moments in the driver seat and on a bar, while cutting back to the singer walking through an industrial corridor in tears.

“The future that we hold is so unclear / but I’m not alive until you call / and now I bet the odds against it all / save your advice cause I won’t hear / you might be right, but I don’t care,” she sings the stuttering hook. “There’s a million reasons why I should give you up / but the heart wants what it wants.”

The track — off her compilation For You album — is available for download on iTunes here.

Selena will be joining On Air with Ryan Seacrest in-studio today (Thursday, November 6) after 7am.
